Hit Business Ideas shows how many businesses of each kind exist in each U.S. state, how many people they employ, how big they are and how those counts changed between 2017 and 2023. Every figure comes from one public source, the U.S. Census Bureau's County Business Patterns.

What it is for

People thinking about a trade often ask a simple factual question first: how many of these already exist where I live? This site answers that question with official counts and shows its working.

What it will not do

• It does not predict what you could earn. We make no income estimates.
• It does not tell you which business to start or whether a market is saturated.
• It does not give tax, legal, insurance or lending advice.

Who runs it

The site is an independent publisher of public data. It is not connected to the Census Bureau or any government body. The method is documented on the method and sources page so any figure can be checked against the original files.

Corrections

If a number looks wrong, tell us with the page address and the figure you expected. We check it against the Census file and fix confirmed errors.
